Top 5 of 2013: Reflections and Goals

Though I am not a New Year’s resolution kind of person, as the year came to a close and I wrote my hits and misses…I started doing some number crunching and thinking over my hobby. Here is what I found:

1. My sewing eyes go much faster than my sewing hands

I thought I had been sewing constantly and made so many garments…but in the end it turns out they were 26. It is certainly not bad but it also means that I can’t possibly make many more.

I will now make a list of garments I’d like to make and every time I go ooh, aah for a new pattern, fabric, idea or whatever I will have to either take out existing garments or just ‘say no’ to the latest cool trend…a bit like refusing another piece of cake after you had too much.

I will post about my plans and work in progress in the coming days.

2. Check that sewing budget!

This year I set aside a specific amount each month for my sewing hobby (this includes domain/hosting maintenance) and I went over budget! It’s like if I my year had 14.5 months instead of 12. Though I did save in other areas, if you had asked me prior to this check I would have told you: My sewing hobby doesn’t cost me much. Clearly I was wrong.

In 2014 I will have to make up for that and I need to check more closely how my money is being spent.

3. Show me the pants!

Together with my unrealistic expectations went my plan to make pants.  There are no excuses. The pattern has been in my stash for 2 years and the fabric was ready since last February. Somehow I got sidetracked.

So the goal is to make 1 pair of pants in 2014.

2. Controlla quelle spese!

L’anno prossimo dovrò recuperare e dovrò controllare ancora meglio come spendo i miei soldi.

3. Facci vedere i pantaloni!

4. I don’t have a stash problem!

Just like the worst stash addict on the planet, I refused to admit I have a stash problem. I kept on comparing myself with worse offenders and saying…well, my stash is not that big.

Well, try to pack and then lift the boxes around while renovating and the problem will immediately become apparent!

Clearly that realization has not stopped me from buying two extra pieces of fabric during Christmas break (see photo evidence!) because you know I was on vacation and I would never find it again, and it was a bargain (at least in local terms). I really acted like the worst offender. Thankfully there’s no Sewing Police or I’d be in jail serving my sentence already!

This is why Andrea’s and Gail’s Stash Diet 2014 couldn’t have come at a better time. What can I say…I am on board…the rules will be written shortly. If you don’t have a stash problem like me, why don’t you join in! It will be fun I am sure.

Well, at least there’s no food involved because also in that area my eyes are very big and my stomach is bigger than you may imagine!

5. Sewing social is great

2013 has been the year of social sewing. In April I met lovely Evie, Melissa, and joined Rachel’s sewing meetup…And I felt like I was sitting across celebrities, when speaking to Karen and Roisin.

Though we still haven’t met, I was happy to start La Mia Boutique Magazine Reviews partnership with Anna from Paunnet. Hope to meet her next year.

Last but not least, I met La Mia Boutique staff, Marine from Supercut, the nicest Italian online fabric and notion store, and went to the biggest Italian crafts fair Abilmente.

It would be a dream of mine to meet some more of you next year. It’s so much fun!

And because it’s December 31, 2013, it’s time to wish you a fun New Year’s Eve and Happy New Year!

See you in 2014!

  1. No, I don’t have a stash problem, either. Good to know I’m not alone.

You did a lot of experimenting and trying new things this year, plus making complicated garments. Considering that, 26 really is a big number.

  2. My stash doesn’t have any problems, on the contrary, it is growing and flourishing… I haven’t made pants the last year (I did make a pair of shorts though) and the stars tell me that there’s going to be men’s trousers in my 2014…

  3. Happy New Year, Silvia!
I think I need to get back to list writing, too (I used to do that, but somehow didn’t, last year). Here’s to well-made plans!

  4. Hahaha! I love it that you tattled on yourself about your two fabric purchases! I do that all the time too! And oh – the budget! I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve spent!

    • Gail, I hope it’s not too cold where you are and that there aren’t too many disruptions. It was hard to limit myself there were plenty of bargains on the racks…luckily my husband was waiting outside so I had to leave after some time! Otherwise I would have spent the afternoon at the store!

  5. Thank you for the pressing ham pattern. I will be using it right away as I have discovered it is very useful to have one of those.

Muchos besos.

  7. 26 garments — you definitely had a good (and productive) year! I can’t believe you tracked your sewing budget — you are very brave to face the reality of how much a sewing hobby can cost. I’m in the “ignorance is bliss” camp! Happy New Year and I look forward to reading about your sewing and knitting adventures in 2014!

  8. Silvia, it was so nice to meet you too! Have a wonderful 2014 xxx

  9. I’m not a blogger but I love reading your blog! Come to Los Angeles and we will visit the fabric stores downtown and go to Mood Los Angeles!

  10. Silvia, you’ve had a great year. Twenty six garments is a lot in my books, plus you learned how to knit! I totally like your idea of writing up a list of items you want to sew (anything involving a list is to my liking) and sticking with it so if you get distracted by a new pattern/project you would have to substitute something that is already on the list. I may have to copy you on that front because I get distracted all the time, and end up writing and re-writing new lists from scratch. Plus, I’m so glad you will be joining us on the Stash Diet: 2014. Happy New Year!

    • Andrea, it would be great if you joined the list making effort! The more the merrier…BTW I just saw a beautiful dress that will be published on February Burda…I’m getting sidetracked before even starting!
