Top 5 of 2013: Hits & Misses

Top 5 of 2013 - An Annual Blog Series

Let’s start with the top failures! Shall we? To read the full post simply click on the title link.

2013 Failures – I disastri 2013

Burda Peplum Top

bodice back muslin 1-raised

The picture says it all! A total failure! The sleeves were a disaster.
I never went back to it in the end! And in all honesty I am not even sure I would have liked the peplum (or rather penguin… given the shape) on me!

My first undiesunderwear failure
This is when you realize that despite 3 1/2 years sewing pretty much full-time you can still be a newbie!

Jocole Cross-over Dress

Jocole wrap top

The one where I forgot to cut the skirt back…so instead of a dress I had to make a tunic!

Here is where I prove my point…Cutting mistakes (and mistakes in general) are there to haunt you when you least expect them! A check list can help! This is not an utter failure as it gets worn a lot despite the crossover fit issues!

Winnie Lounge Pants

Winnie Lounge Pants - detail

I totally miscalculated the width needed to get the pants on and off! I really have to pull to get them past my bum! I should have not interfaced the waistband. It’s too stiff now and doesn’t fit snugly enough at the waist! They get worn very little despite the lovely fabric. Any suggestions?

Avete qualche suggerimento?

2013 Hits! – I migliori del 2013

My wedding outfit

Well, this one is more for sentimental reasons! And for the time spent on the crossover neckline easing!

If I were to redo it again, I would change the stole for a bolero.

Twist-top Petite Robe Chiara Boni – La Mia Boutique 09/2013 #8

DSC_4796_webI love the back design and the fabric too! Will certainly wear it a lot as soon as summer comes.

Paco Peralta’s apron skirt

Apron Skirt - Pencil Skirt

Genius design! and perfect fit: one of those rare occasions where the pattern sizing matches your own body!

I even made a second version for summer

Herringbone orange jacket

Simplicity 2446 Amazing Fit Misses' Jacket

Though I only made it recently, I have been wearing it quite frequently.

This Simplicity 2446 Amazing Fit Misses’ Jacket is certainly a pattern I would recommend if you want to venture in the jacket territory.

Miette Cardigan

_1030006_webIt was my first proper knitting project and I was happy I managed to complete it. It’s the project that sums up my take on life: never fear a new challenge, it will be hard at first, sometimes you will fail and have to start from scratch, but when you succeed that feeling of satisfaction is priceless!

But most of all, can’t finish this post without telling you I am immensely thankful for the time you take reading my blog!

  1. You certainly had some lovely hits in 2013! It’s good to look back on what didn’t work too… Happy New Year!

  2. You have such style!
Have you considered taking the waistband off the lounge pants and adding a small panel down each outside leg in a complimentary fabric…almost like a tuxedo stripe. You could then cut a new waistband in the same fabric as the stripe and, voila, design feature and problem solved!

  3. Happy New Year Silvia! Your hits were amazing! Your wedding dress is so pretty!

  4. Silvia, your hits are so wonderful that your misses don’t even count. Besides, that Jocole dress looks great in tunic length! I love the fact that you enjoyed knitting this year and that your first project looks so amazing. In fact, I love all your wins but I’m especially impressed by your wedding outfit – awesome!

  9. What fabulous hits!
Never mind the ‘misses’ I always think they are important & essential part of sewing. Some you win, some you lose – but you are always learning :-)

  10. Winnie Lounge Pants…probably defeat the purpose of a lounge pants, but is there any vertical seam where you can insert a zipper instead? Unless you want to unpick the waistband and redo?

Love how your top 5 successes cover a wide range of garments, each such classy yet interesting pieces. But there are definitely others you’ve made this past year that should be on the success list too if it weren’t limited to 5!

And thanks for all the La Mia Boutique reviews. Just went out and bought the last issue on the new stand yesterday!

    Buon Natale :)
